WHAT’S YOUR SYMPTOM? It could seem to be about anything. It could seem to be about your money: you might be a compulsive debtor or spender or a compulsive under-earner.
What is it really about?
It could seem to be about your relationship, either the one you have or the one you don’t have. It could seem to be about your work or your health or your intelligence. It could seem to be about whether or not you are a “winner” (or loser).
What is it really about?
Whatever your symptom, it is an area in your life where you are not at ease: an area of dis-ease, an area where you keep doing things you do not want to do or where you keep not-doing things you very much want to do.
And it is not that you do not “know” what to do. Who doesn’t know how to lose weight or get organized or get to work? Everything you know is consistent with you having your dis-ease. So no amount of thinking or “figuring out” will get you out of this one.
And it is also not that you can’t do better, you can! You probably have done better!
The secret here is not that you “can’t” or that you don’t understand, the paradox here is that you very much want to but you won’t!
The truth here is that - You will NOT!
As Nietzsche put it, “Mankind would rather will-NOT than not will!”
A SPIRITUAL DIS-EASE IS A DIS-EASE OF THE WILL!
We know what to do about issues of knowledge. We know how to learn and we are usually willing to learn more about ourselves. And we know what to do about issues of behavior. We are willing to try changing our behavior.
